our story
In September of 2005 a core group of about 30 people began meeting in Scott and Julie's home. Our goal at this time was to begin the initial groundbreaking work of establishing our values, cultural context and initial strategy. We spent time each week praying together, dreaming together and working together. We arrived at a name, obtained our non-profit status, and starting bonding as a community.
On April 2, 2006 we started gathering on Sunday nights at Chandler United Methodist Church located in downtown chandler for our community gathering on Sunday nights at 6pm. This time has been and continues to be a time to discover community with each other as we worship, pray, learn, sacrifice, eat, serve speak into each other's lives and all the other stuff that happens.
On September 17, 2006 we had our official "launch". This is when we view our church community being "birthed". It was when we realized we are no longer preparing to be all that we hope to be but when we are going to give all we have and all we are to the vision & calling of God in our lives.
Portico is a story about people and God at this time in this place. We look back to those who have been a part of the story of God for thousands of years and we pray for the story of people and God in the years to come. But right now what we have and who we are together at this time we call portico. All are welcomed to journey with us as we hope to see many "missional outposts" of portico spread throughout the valley and beyond.
